Apt. worker wins $18M in premises fire lawsuit

A 37-year-old man employed by an apartment complex to refinish their apartments’ floors recently won a lawsuit that he filed against the complex and its managers. The worker filed the lawsuit after suffering numerous injuries in a fire at the apartments.

According to court documents, the plaintiff had second- and third-degree burns on over half of his body after a fire broke out at an apartment where he was lacquering flooring. The fire was caused by a gas-fired stove in the unit. Fumes from the lacquer were ignited by the gas, and when the worker attempted to flee the apartment, he fell and caught on fire.

The 37-year-old needed more than 20 surgeries to treat his burn injuries. In addition, psychologists testified that the man suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder because of the fire.

The plaintiff claimed that the apartment complex knew he was working that day, and that they should have turned off gas to the unit he was working in. A jury found the complex and its managers to have been negligent, and awarded the victim $18, 681,323.
