Last week, officials recalled whole cantaloupes sold under the Rocky Ford brand after they were linked to a listeria outbreak. The cantaloupes came from a melon farm in Colorado.
4 deaths and 35 cases of illness linked to the recalled cantaloupes have been reported. 11 of these cases were in Colorado.
Consuming products contaminated with listeria can cause listeriosis. Listeriosis is typically found in products like deli meats, hot dogs, and cheeses. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle pain, stiff neck, headache, digestive problems, and convulsions.
Chris Urbina, Colorado’s Health Director, said that people who are most likely to be affected by listeria bacteria are people over the age of 60 and people whose immune systems may be compromised from a transplant or a chronic illness. In addition, infants and pregnant women may be more susceptible to contaminated food-related illnesses like listeriosis.
