Junior Seau’s brain to be donated for research

NFL Hall of Famer Junior Seau was found dead in his home last Wednesday. He is alleged to have committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest. He is at least the third former NFL star to have done so in the past year.

This tragic event comes during a time when the football league is facing lawsuits for not warning its players of the dangers of concussions. Other players who have committed suicide in the past year have been said to suffer from depression and mental problems. The lawsuits claim that these suicides may be connected to concussions the players suffered while on the field.

Seau’s family has released a statement saying that his brain will be donated to science for the betterment of other athletes who may be under similar circumstances. They do not believe concussions necessarily played a role in his early departure.

Junior Seau was inducted into the Hall of Fame during halftime of a Nov. 27, 2011 game between the Chargers and the Broncos. Our condolences go out to Seau’s family.
