The Interstate 70 construction zone on the east end of Glenwood Canyon is set to be the subject of extreme scrutiny of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) officials after yet another fatal motor vehicle accident occurred there on May 22, the second within the past six weeks.
CDOT spokeswoman Nancy Shanks said their department reviews every road accident in which a fatality is involved to assess whether highway conditions played a part in the auto accident.
In the most recent accident, a Mazda sedan collided head-on with a semi-truck carrying beer west of the reverse Curve tunnel. The female driver of the car was proclaimed dead on the spot, while the three passengers in the car with her were brought to the Vail Valley Medical Center.
Along with the Colorado State Patrol, the State Patrol’s Victim Crime Unit is holding investigations regarding the situation.
