Man Pleads Guilty in Fatal Crash

William Shaffer, 61, of Iowa, faces a maximum jail term of 60 days after causing a vehicular accident west of Howard on U.S. 50 that left 41-year-old Heather Ann Dunn dead. Shaffer pleaded guilty to careless driving resulting in death, which is considered a Class 1 traffic violation.

Although Shaffer’s original charge of vehicular homicide by reckless driving was dismissed, he now faces at least $9,000 in damages and is banned from operating any motor vehicle.

He was temporarily released on a $30,000 bond and allowed to return home to Iowa to await further court hearings.
