A family in Nebraska was recently awarded $1.8 million in a birth injury lawsuit. A jury in the state decided to award $1.2 million in compensation for past and future medical expenses related to a 3-year old girl’s birth injuries and $600,000 for her suffering last week.
The 3-year old girl was born in June 2008 through a vacuum extraction delivery. According to the lawsuit, the vacuum was not necessary to deliver the child and the decision to use it by staff at the hospital was negligent.
The vacuum caused the girl’s shoulder to become stuck behind her mother’s pelvis. Doctors pulled on the girl’s head to help her out, causing serious nerve damage and permanent injuries. The girl’s left arm is now paralyzed.
