Pfizer recalls 1 million packs of birth control pills

Yesterday, pharmaceutical manufacturer Pfizer Inc. recalled 1 million packages of birth control pills due to a packing error that could put women at risk for unintended pregnancy.

The recalled pills include generic Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradoil Tablets and Lo/Ovral-28 Tablets.  These brands of birth control include 21 days of active pills and 7 days of sugar pills.  If  they are not taken in order and at the same time every day, the pills’ ability to prevent pregnancy is reduced.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, Pfizer found that some of the packages contained too many active pills and others too few.  A release from Pfizer states, “As a result of this packaging error, the daily regimen for these oral contraceptives may be incorrect and could leave women without adequate contraception, and at risk for unintended pregnancy.  These packaging defects do not post any immediate health risks.”

Officials recommend that individuals taking the recalled birth control contact their doctor and begin using other forms of contraception immediately.
