Son suffers brain injury in hit-and-run, family fights for tougher laws

A Denver family is focusing on changing laws in the area so that people who flee the scene of an accident will face prison time.

The family is pushing this after a hit-and-run accident left their youngest brother with a serious brain injury and the driver was only sentenced to probation. The driver did not receive incarceration because he was allegedly unable to care for himself.

The accident occurred in October as the driver struck the victim and his friend while they were crossing a crosswalk in a neighborhood park. The 21-year-old driver had no previous criminal record and was sentenced to four years probation, six months work-release jail program and 300 hours of community service.
