From planning your route to designating a sober driver, the steps you take BEFORE you get into the car can save your life. In fact, one of the most important things you can do is to have a well-stocked first aid kit and safety items in your car ready to assist you if you get into trouble.

If you are injured in an accident or suddenly find yourself stranded on the road, having a full first aid kit could come in very handy. After all, you never know when you’ll need to bandage up a laceration or survive the night. Here are the 6 items you must have in your car at all times:

6 Items You Must Have in Your Car At All Times

  • Printed Maps – you never know when you will be out of cellular range. Relying on your GPS only works if you are within range – so having a few printed maps can be life-saving. If you find yourself stuck in the middle of nowhere, those maps could get you to safety.
  • Seat Belt Cutter – if you suddenly find yourself stuck inside of your vehicle, being able to cut your seatbelt off could be lifesaving. Make sure you store it somewhere close by where you could reach it if you were stuck in your seat belt.
  • Window Breaker – there are times when you may find yourself trapped underwater or in a situation where your door will not open. Being able to break the window may be our only way out in that situation.
  • Food & Water – while you can’t prepare for every emergency, there could come a time when you may find yourself stranded in your vehicle for long periods of time until help can arrive, such as a snowstorm. Keep a gallon of water in your car, plus some non-perishable food to help you during these types of emergencies. Granola or protein bars make excellent emergency food kits.
  • First Aid Kit – every car should have a complete first aid kit. These kits should have multiple size bandages, plus gauze and antiseptic ointment. A sling is also a good idea to keep in your kit, in case you find yourself with a broken or dislocated arm and need to immobilize the extremity. Your first aid kit should also include Ibuprofen and Tylenol for pain relief.
  • Flashlight – a flashlight could be invaluable if you suddenly find yourself stranded in the middle of nowhere at night. Be sure your flashlight has appropriate batteries and check this periodically to ensure that it is still in good working order.
