Modern car technology has come a long way in the last decade. New safety features drastically reduce accidents and fatalities on our roads. In particular, two driver assistance features have made our roads safer: lane departure warning systems and blind spot monitoring. Each one has saved countless lives and has the potential to reinvent how we drive. lane departure warning systems reduce car accidents
According to a new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, lane departure warning systems have reduced the rate of accidents by 11% and reduced the injuries in accidents by 21%. In particular, this warning system was responsible for a drastic reduction in sideswipe accidents and fatal head-on collisions. Just how many lives has this system saved? Lane departure warning systems were responsible for an 86% reduction in fatalities on our roads. While not every car is manufactured with this technology, if they were, an additional 85,000 accidents and 55,000 injuries could be prevented every single year.
The IIHS report found that blind spot monitoring systems were responsible for a 14% reduction in car accidents and a 23% reduction in injury accidents. If all cars came equipped with this technology, an additional 50,000 crashes and 16,000 injuries would be prevented every year.
