On September 30, 2018, 25-year-old Angela Wimmer stopped at a stoplight at the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Kipling Street on her way home from church. Suddenly, she was hit from behind by a suspected drunk driver. The collision pushed her car into oncoming traffic, where she was hit by three other vehicles. Medical teams rushed the young woman to the hospital, but she later died from her injuries. Now, Todd Grudznske, the serial drunk driver on trial for the deadly crash.
According to reports, Todd Grudznske was a repeat DUI offender with multiple convictions on his record. He is facing trial for first-degree murder, vehicular homicide, DUI, felony DUI, reckless driving, and violation of a protection order. Lakewood police confirmed that Grudznske had been previously arrested for DUI at least 6 different times in Adams and Jefferson counties.
At the trial, Todd Grudznske lamented his decision to get behind the wheel of his car that morning. He had been bar hopping and admitted he was drunk when he slammed into Angela’s car traveling an estimated 58 to 61 mph. The prosecution called 39 witnesses to the stand and multiple statements were made that Grudznske consumed at least nine shots of liquor and four beers the morning of the fatal accident. His Blood Alcohol Content level an hour after the crash was .341 – more than four times the legal limit. If he is convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison with no parole.
Although Colorado law now makes it a felony offense to be convicted of a fourth DUI, that law was not enacted until 2015. According to accounts, his last DUI conviction was in 2007. As such, the jury will not be informed of his previous convictions during the trial.
