Underinflated tires increase chances of car accidents

A new study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that vehicles whose tires are underinflated by more than 25 percent are three times more likely to be involved in auto accidents resulting from tire problems than those with properly inflated tires.

The study examined car accident data from the period between 2005 and 2007. Five percent of the vehicles studied experienced a tire problem immediately before the accident.

Drivers are urged to maintain properly inflated tires. Consumer Reports recommends people check their tire pressure every month. The study showed that as tire wear increases, the risk of a tire-related accident goes up dramatically.
